Select
plants that fit the local climate. |
Consult
local nurseries regarding hardiness and plant habit. |
Finding
the correct plant for the local climate may also be aided by USDA zone maps.
These maps yield information about the minimum temperatures in each region
of North America. This data is important because plants grow in a natural
environment and survive only to certain minimum temperatures. Plants placed
out of their natural zone means that they will be short-lived. |
Short-lived
plants must be frequently replaced. This interrupts the design. Further,
dead plants allow other, weedy plants to take their space. It is important
to keep healthy plants alive and appropriately placed. |
