Maintaining the New American Garden . . .
James van Sweden stresses that New American Gardens are low maintenance, not no maintenance.
Maintenance is related to plant choices. Concentrated effort is required to select the correct plants and to properly establish them in the planting site.

Plants should be selected that will attain the proper dimensions for the design

Particularly aggressive species must be used judiciously or avoided.
Water requirements must be noted and combinations with similar moisture requirements should be utilized.
Irrigation, weed control, and nutrient supplements may be required in the establishment stage. Established gardens need little additional water, pesticides, or pruning.
